This homepage introduces my academic achievements and my research. I joined the School of Health and Sport Sciences in 2019 as a Professor of Sport Philosophy. I have worked in tertiary education since 2004. My research and teaching are primarily within the broader sociology of sport and the philosophy of various sport fields. I am particularly interested in the globalisation of sports, abusive conduct and the coaching philosophy of basketball coaches, and the reforms in extracurricular sports activities in Japanese schools.
With regard to the globalisation of sports; I have examined migratory motivations, the differences in sports culture between athletes’ birthplaces and Japan, and furthermore, I have studied athletes who migrate across borders, whom I have named ‘borderless athletes’. In particular, I have conducted interviews with Japanese-born Koreans in the J League and American professional basketball players in Japan. Additionally, I have interviewed former NBA commissioner David Stern, as well as representatives of the bj league, Australian NBL, and EuroLeague, and through their perspectives, I have relativized my own view of sports. With each interview lasting about an hour, I could get a glimpse of the lives of various sports personnel. In the future, I would like to introduce different sports cultures and issues in Japanese sports on this website.
