(碑石正面) A Commemorative Monument
This memorial stone was erected in memory of the Citizens of Hakodate
who were victims of bombing raids at the end of World War II on the 14th
and 15th of July,1945. The raids were carried out by over fifty United
States warplanes made up of Grammond Fois and Corsair F4u's.
If we include casualties on lond and sea, there were over 1030 victims
of the bombing.
In Hakodate in Maisukaze Cho Wakamatsu Cho, Kaigan Cho, Omori Cho, Komadome Cho, Tenjin Cho, Hatago Cho and Funami Cho, 169 houses were damaged, and 384 houses were burnt down.
In addition to this, many building were destroyed, and a great number
of people suffered loss in varioys ways.
It was decided to erect this monument last the cruelty of such bombings,
and the man-made evil of war should be forgotten.
The monument is also meant to console the souls of the victims, and to
proclaim and strongly resolve to strive for peace and the reduction of
armaments.
